Chivay Peru

A landscape dominated by farming and marked by some of the most intensely terraced hillsides on the planet. The lush greenery and easy accessibility have made this the busiest region of the canyon, with the majority of commerce centered in the quaint town of Chivay. The Canyon's unabashedly disorganized hub, this traditional town has welcomed tourism without (so far) losing its rugged high-country character. Long may it persist! The market area and the main square are great spots to catch a glimpse of the ornate attire worn by local Colca women. The town itself offers captivating views of snow-capped peaks and terraced hillsides, and serves as a sensible base for exploring smaller towns further up the valley.
